THIRD DISTRICT COURT OF APPEAL HISTORICAL SOCIETY

January 27, 2019

Fellow Members:

The Historical Society held its annual meeting and elections and your 2019 Board of Directors are: Jeffrey B. Crockett, Andrew P. Kawel, Jennifer Olmedo-Rodriguez, Karla Perkins, Rebecca M. Plasencia, and Jay A. Yagoda.

The Board in turn elected Charles M-P “Chip” George President, Elliot B. Kula, Vice President, Thomas S. Ward, Secretary, Dinah Stein, Treasurer and Jennifer Olmedo-Rodriguez, Membership Director. Both the Board and Officers thank Past-President Philip D. Parrish for his leadership and hard work over the years. Well done Phil!

2019 started with a BANG! We’ve seen the retirement of Judge Richard Suarez and Chief Judge Leslie Rothenberg. The elevation of Circuit Judges Bronwyn Miller and Eric Hendon to the Third District Court of Appeal. The swearing-in of Judge Barbara Lagoa as Chief Judge. The elevation of Judges, now Justices, Barbara Lagoa and Robert Luck to the Florida Supreme Court. The election and swearing in of Chief Judge Kevin Emas, and the election of Judge Ivan Fernandez as Chief Judge-Elect.

During the coming months:

  • The Historical Society will hold its ever popular “Biennial Members Only Luncheon with the Judges” on May 17, 2019 at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Florida.
  • The Historical Society will co-host Judge Bronwyn Millers’ Investiture on February 15, 2019.
  • The Historical Society will also co-host Judge Eric Hendon’s Investiture, date and time to be announced.
  • On Thursday, February 28, 2019 the Rosemary Barkett Appellate American Inn of Court, which is administered by your Historical Society, will hold its first event of 2019: “Meet the New Judges of the Third District Court of Appeal: An Evening with Judges Bronwyn Miller and Eric Wm. Hendon” at the University of Miami School of Law.
  • During March or early April, the Historical Society will join the Court in welcoming the two new Judges chosen to fill the seats vacated by Justices Luck and Lagoa.
  • The renovation of the Courthouse will be completed in the coming weeks and the rededication will take place in late April or early May.
  • Finally, the Historical Society will once again host its Annual Ice Cream Social honoring the Court Staff, date and time to be announced.
We have renewed our commitment to help provide coaching for students in the Florida High School Moot Court Competition. This is a great program, and it’s fun working with the students (I’ve been doing it for five years and really enjoy it). Please contact Harvey Sepler if you are interested in coaching a team.

I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as the Historical Society’s President and look forward to working with each of you during coming the year. If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact myself or any of your Officers or Directors. Remember, it is your organization – come out, meet the Judges, see your friends, enjoy it!

Best Regards,

Charles M-P “Chip” George
