On January 27, 2017, the Third District Court of Appeal Historical Society joined in honoring Former Chief Judge Linda Ann Wells at her retirement celebration and reception at the Court. Judge Wells served as the first Third District Court of Appeal female Chief Judge from 2011-2013.

Third District Court of Appeal Historical Society honored Former Chief Judge Frank A. Shepherd at his retirement celebration and reception on December 13, 2016. Friends of Judge Shepherd, the Court, and the Historical Society gathered to celebrate at the Court.

On Thursday, September 15, 2016, Judge Thomas Logue of the Third District Court of Appeal spoke on the topic "Race, Rights & Power: How the Civil War Shaped the Modern U.S. Constitution." The program took place at Akerman LLP's Miami office and was acclaimed by all who attended.

The Dade County Bar Association awarded Judge Vance E. Salter its 2016 Justice Joseph Story Award.

Judge Salter sits on the Florida Third District Court of Appeal and is the third recipient of the award. The DCBA formally presented him with this honor at its annual “Over the Rainbow” judicial award ceremony on October 7, 2016, at the Coral Gables Country Club.

The Third District Court of Appeals's website aptly describes the legacy of the award's namesake:

"Justice Story’s contributions to the Supreme Court continue to affect us today – some 200 years after he was first appointed to the High Court. Justice Story’s penchant for protecting the rights of property owners helped shape early American jurisprudence in a tailored direction to encourage ownership in the celebrated decisions that all of us remember fondly from First Year Property Class, including Martin v. Hunter’s Lessee and the case of The Amistad case. A prolific author, scholar, chaired Professor for Law School, Justice Story fought to ensure that the U.S. Constitution be protected for what he called suiting the purposes of the people, in framing this great character of our liberties, and to provide for minute specifications of its power.

Historians agree that Justice Joseph Story reshaped American law in a conservative direction that protected property rights."

On behalf of the Third District Court of Appeal Historical Society, congratulations to Judge Salter!

Judge Edwin A. Scales III of the Third District Court of Appeal was appointed by the Florida Supreme Court to the board of The Florida Bar Foundation, a statewide charitable organization whose mission is to provide greater access to justice.

The Florida Bar Foundation, a philanthropic organization established in 1956 by The Florida Bar Board of Governors under the authority of the Florida Supreme Court, provides greater access to justice, primarily through funding of programs that:
      • expand and improve representation and advocacy on behalf of low-income persons in civil legal matters;
      • improve the fair and effective administration of justice; and
      • promote service to the public by members of the legal profession by making public service an integral component of the law school experience.
